5 Common Mistakes New Puppy Owners Make

Posted in Behavior & Training

Has your beloved pet dog given birth to puppies, or have you decided to adopt a puppy yourself? If so, you need to avoid the following 5 mistakes when raising your puppies!

1. Allowing Them to Roam Freely

Puppies love to wander and explore, but at the same time, they cannot avoid dangers yet. Accidents can happen, and they may also chew and destroy any object they find. Therefore, allowing them to roam freely when they are young is a mistake. Instead, you should designate a specific area for them and supervise them when they are outside.

2. Delaying Exposure to The World

This is the opposite of the previous point. If you keep puppies confined indoors out of fear of danger, they will not develop naturally; instead, they may grow up to be sickly and timid. Therefore, starting from about 3 months of age, you should expose them to new environments and other pets.

3. Walking Them Immediately with a Leash

Some people tend to use a leash immediately when taking puppies outside for a walk. This is actually a mistake. Apart from being curious, puppies are not very difficult to control, so using a leash can be more of a nuisance to them. You should only start training them with a leash when they are older.

4. Scolding

There are times when people tend to shout at or hit puppies when they misbehave. For puppies, this causes fear and damages the bond. Instead, you can train them to associate their actions with a hand gesture or a specific word.

5. Skipping Health Checkups

This point is particularly weak in countries like Myanmar. Since puppies are delicate and may have congenital diseases, you should give them regular health checkups from a young age to ensure they live a full lifespan.

Puppies are smarter than other small animals, making them quite similar to human babies. That's why it's not surprising that people treat them like their own children. As you care for them like your own children, I urge you to be careful not to make the mistakes discussed here.
