Common Summer Health Risks and Tips

When the climate brings about a hot and dry summer in Myanmar, the residents suffer from various health challenges. As temperatures soar, it's essential to be aware  of common summer health risks and take proactive measures to stay healthy and enjoy the season. Here are some prevalent health concerns and tips for care during the scorching summer months in Myanmar.

Dehydration

As we are already aware of, Myanmar's temperatures are increasingly high in recent years. It can lead to excessive sweating, putting individuals at risk of dehydration. Prolonged dehydration can result in fatigue, dizziness, and even heatstroke. To prevent dehydration, it is crucial to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Carry a water bottle, particularly when venturing outdoors, and avoid excessive consumption of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.

Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke

The intense heat can result in heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, and confusion. Heat stroke is much more concerning than heat exhaustion. To prevent these conditions, limit outdoor activities during peak sun hours, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and take breaks in the shade. Ensure adequate ventilation and use fans or air conditioning when possible.

Food and Waterborne Diseases

Foods play an important role to stay healthy in the summer.  Warmer temperatures can lead to the rapid growth of bacteria in food and water, increasing the risk of food poisoning and waterborne diseases. Practice good hygiene by washing hands thoroughly, especially before eating, and consuming only properly cooked and freshly prepared food. Drink bottled or boiled water to avoid waterborne illnesses.

Skin Problems

Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause sunburn, heat rashes, and other skin issues. Protect your skin by applying sunscreen with a high SPF, wearing hats and sunglasses, and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours. Keep your skin clean and dry to prevent heat-related skin problems.
