Pets Can Get Sick in Winter Too

Posted in Pet Health

The winter is gradually approaching, and the weather is getting colder. We are all being careful about catching colds and getting sick during the seasonal transition, aren't we? Do you know that this can happen not only to humans but also to our beloved pets? Whether you are learning this now or are already aware, I want to share this to ensure you remember it well.

Common Misconception

The first thing to talk about here is a common misconception regarding pets’ fur. Some people assume that because dogs and cats have thicker fur than humans, they are more resistant to the cold. While this may seem partially true, it cannot be reliably assumed.

The thickness of the fur varies depending on the type or breed of pet, and it also varies based on their age and health condition. Furthermore, areas without fur, such as the eyes, nose, and paw pads, and areas with less fur, such as the ears and tail, can be more exposure to the cold. Although it doesn't snow in Myanmar, there can be high humidity, moisture, and mist in the early morning and at night. In such conditions, their fur may find it difficult to provide warmth. That's why pets can also catch colds and get sick.

Common Illnesses

The common illnesses and symptoms pets experience in winter are shown in the table below:

Illness Type

Symptoms to Watch For

Common Cold, Hypothermia

Discoloration of ears or tail, lethargy

Kennel Cough (Bordetella)

Strong, hacking cough, often followed by a gag

Dog Flu

Coughing, runny nose, fever, lethargy

Arthritis/ Joint Pain

Slow movement when sitting or standing, difficulty jumping to a high place

Prevention and Treatment

All pet owners should take careful protective measures to prevent these illnesses. The first and most important thing is the pet's sleeping area. Since the weather is coldest at night, the pet's sleeping area needs to be warm and cozy. If necessary, you can dress your pets in small shirts or sweaters. If you notice the symptoms mentioned above, you need to contact knowledgeable veterinarians and clinics promptly for timely treatment.

So, I want you all to take care of your beloved pets during the winter to prevent them from getting sick, and to take care of your own health too.
