Pet ownership doesn't always mean buying an expensive pet or adopting from a shelter. Sometimes, destiny brings a stray pet right to your doorstep. Other times, people specifically choose to adopt strays from the streets.
Adopting a stray animal is a truly noble act. It means saving a life and providing a better future, while also benefiting the community. For you, it provides a lifelong companion and a memory to cherish. Whether one has just arrived at your home or you are planning to adopt one yourself, here are the things you should know.

Step (1) - Check if They Already Have an Owner
This applies to strays that show up on their own. Some pets actually have owners but might have wandered too far and lost their way home. For some, it is easy to tell if they are strays if you see them regularly in the neighborhood. If it's an unfamiliar animal, check carefully for a collar. Even if they aren't wearing one, look for a "collar mark" around their neck, as it might have fallen off. Additionally, check social media to see if anyone has posted about a lost pet.
Step (2) - Health Checkup
When adopting a stray, the most important priority is health. Because these animals have survived harsh conditions and various hardships, they will likely have some degree of injuries or health deficiencies. The best course of action is to take them to a qualified veterinarian for necessary treatments and vaccinations first. After that, ensure they are provided with proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
Step (3) - Creating a "Home"
Creating a warm home for a stray pet cannot be done perfectly on the very first day. They need time to adjust. For this, you should follow the 3-3-3 rule:
- 3 Days: Giving the pet 3 days to get used to the new people and environment.
- 3 Weeks: Taking 3 weeks to observe their behavior and teach them the habits you want them to learn.
- 3 Months: Giving them 3 months to truly consider your place their "Home."
Once you have crossed these stages, congratulations! You have done a noble act and successfully adopted a lovely, forever-loyal pet.
