To Be Able to Care for Others, Start by Taking Care of Yourself

Posted in Health, General Health

In flight safety, there is a rule established: "Secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others." There is a similar Burmese proverb: "One good tree shelters ten thousand birds.”

It is exactly the same with health. Taking care of your own health is the same as caring for others. Let's discuss this in detail.

What is Self-Care?

Taking care of yourself is not the same as being selfish. Especially when it comes to health, the most important priority is yourself. If you are healthy, you can care for others well and enjoy life. A person who is unhealthy doesn't enjoy living and also causes both physical and mental exhaustion for those around them. That is why we say that taking care of yourself is a way of taking care of your loved ones. So, let's continue to discuss what areas we should focus on and how to care for them.

Physical Health

When people talk about health care, they usually think of physical health first. This is because it is the most obvious and often the most affected. If any part of the body is unhealthy, it impacts social and financial aspects to some extent. Not only that, but it becomes difficult to care for loved ones near you, and it can even harm them. Therefore, it is important to always take care of your lifestyle and diet to ensure they are healthy. Since some diseases are often noticed too late, it is also beneficial to have regular health checkups.

Mental Health

Even when people remember to care for their physical health, they often forget about or neglect their mental health. In fact, mental health is just as important. There is a saying: "A healthy mind makes the body young; a damaged mind breaks the body." This is truly accurate. If your mind is unhealthy, your body can also be affected, and it can affect your surroundings to some extent. Having a good mental state is a necessary condition for being able to care for others. To achieve this, constantly evaluate your mental state, reduce the things that mentally exhaust or stress you out, and let go of what needs to be released.

Spiritual and Social Health

This is a type of health that people don't often talk about, but it is important. While we previously talked about your psychological health, spiritual and social health refers to the stability and peace of your spirit (soul) and the quality of your social relationships. For example, if family members don't get along and are constantly having problems, it is impossible for them to care for each other, and there is no peace. This will, in turn, affect their mental and physical health. Therefore, spiritual and social health also needs attention.

If all three of these areas of health are complete, then you are a good tree that can shelter ten thousand birds. As mentioned at the start, taking care of yourself is not selfishness. So, please take good care of your three areas of health so that you can care for your loved ones in the best possible way.
