Why You Need A Day of Nothing

Posted in Health, Mental Wellness

It’s exhausting to struggle through life day after day, stuck in the same repetitive cycle, isn’t it? Some of us get so caught up in work that we forget to rest entirely. Others might rest their bodies but forget to give their minds a break. In reality, even if you can't manage it once a week, you need at least one day a month to do absolutely nothing and let your mind recover.

I should clarify what I mean. "Doing nothing" does not mean lying in bed all day scrolling through your phone. That is a form of relaxation most people already do, but from a psychological perspective, it doesn't count as true rest.

By "doing nothing," I mean a total break, not just from office work, house chores, or business, but also from mentally or socially demanding activities like using social media, going out with friends, or attending social obligations. Before I explain how to do it, I want to tell you why it is necessary.

Rebuilding the Soul

Imagine your brain and soul as a computer. A computer that runs complex tasks day and night without a break will eventually become sluggish and inefficient. However, if you close all programs and perform a full shutdown, it will run much more smoothly when you turn it back on.

Humans are the same. If we work without pause, our minds become dull, our creativity dies out, and eventually, our physical health suffers. Taking a day to do nothing is like hitting that "shutdown" button. It allows your mind to rest and recharges your batteries so you can perform better later. This isn't just a suggestion; it is a necessity.

The Art of Doing Nothing

As mentioned, this isn't about bed rest with a smartphone. It is like letting a glass of cloudy, turbulent water sit still until the sediment settles and the water becomes clear. You can sit somewhere and just watch the clouds, or take a slow walk with no destination, simply observing your surroundings. If you are sleep-deprived, take a long nap without overthinking.

There are two main rules to keep in mind:

  • Stay away from screens (phones, computers, TVs).
  • Completely discard the thought: "Am I wasting my time?"

For those used to being busy or those who are constantly glued to their phones, as most of us are these days, this might feel boring or difficult at first. But keep practicing. You will find that your mind becomes more peaceful and you return to work with significantly more energy.

I’ll leave you with this thought:

“Only in the absence of the noises from outside world, you can truly hear the voice within your own heart."
