Winter-Proof Your Baby's Skin

Posted in Parenting

As the cool and dry winter season arrives, this article will be helpful for moms who are thinking ahead about how to protect their babies’ delicate skin. Although winter in Myanmar isn’t extremely cold, the air can still feel dry and chilly, especially in the early mornings and late evenings. For babies, this kind of weather increases the chances of dry and itchy skin because their skin is much thinner and more fragile than adults’. So, keep reading to find out how to protect your baby’s skin throughout the season.

Simply applying cream isn’t enough. In this type of weather, proper skincare must be combined with the right daily habits to help maintain moisture. So first, let’s learn why baby skin becomes dry so easily during winter.

  • Baby skin is thin and loses moisture faster than adult skin.
  • In addition, their skin does not yet produce enough natural oil (sebum) to protect it.
  • Another common factor is air conditioning, although it’s winter, many households still use the air-con during the day because of warm temperatures, and the dry, cold air can worsen skin dryness.

Knowing these points, here’s what you can do in your baby’s daily routine to prevent dryness:

(1) During Bath Time

Use warm water, not hot and limit bath time to 5–10 minutes. Hot water strips away natural oils from your baby’s skin and causes dryness.

Choose bath products made with gentle, natural ingredients. Look for pH-balanced, fragrance-free, and low-chemical formulas. Always select products suitable for sensitive skin.

After bathing, pat the skin gently with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing harshly, as that can lead to irritation and dryness.

(2) Lock in Moisture

Apply cream within 3 minutes after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp. Avoid watery lotion, use a thicker cream to seal in moisture.

Look for ingredients like Ceramides, Shea Butter, or Coconut Oil, and test which one suits your baby’s skin best.

On very cold days, even if the baby doesn’t take a full bath, apply moisturizer twice daily on dry-prone areas like cheeks, hands, and feet.

(3) Environment & Daily Habits

Dress your baby in soft, breathable cotton layers. Wear in layers instead of thick single clothing so you can remove one layer if they feel warm, preventing sweat and irritation.

If the air-con is on, make sure the airflow does not hit the baby directly and keep the room temperature at 24°C to 26°C. Air-conditioned wind can dry out skin quickly.

Ensure your baby stays hydrated. For breastfeeding babies, feed frequently. For babies over six months, give water according to your doctor’s guidance.

With these simple tips, you and your baby can get through the cold and dry season with ease, free from winter-related skin troubles. Wishing your little one healthy and happy skin in every season. 💛
